We kept in touch over the years \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eand often talked about the possibility of a full concerto, and this project finally \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003egave us the chance to make that a reality. The Hollywood Concerto for Bass \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eTrombone and Orchestra, first conceived for symphony orchestra and later \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eadapted for concert band by Sebastian Quesada, is a piece is in three \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003emovements: the first, Maestoso, introduces the main thematic DNA of the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003econcerto, centered on a melody I originally wrote during my master’s degree at \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eUSC for a class rescore of a scene from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eAzkaban. The assignment was to replace John Williams’s original score for the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003escene, and in doing so I wrote a theme I loved but never had the chance to\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eshare outside the classroom. Revisiting it here allowed me to give that music \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003enew life in a much larger and more expressive form. The second, Adagio, grew \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eout of a simple piano theme I improvised one evening for my wife, shortly after \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewe were married, and it became the lyrical heart of the concerto. The third, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eVivace, actually has its roots in an earlier piece called Little Picture—a short \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ework for bass trombone and fixed media that I originally wrote for Ilan to\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eperform at the International Trombone Festival in Salt Lake City. After it \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ereceived strong reactions from colleagues, we both felt it deserved to expand \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003einto a larger context, and it ultimately became the foundation for the concerto’s \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efinale.
