For French Horn, Tenor Trombone, and Bass Trombone or Tuba, by wonderful composer and trombonist Alex Knutrud.
"I set out to write a collection of pieces to highlight northern New England, a place where I’ve spent so much of my time. Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont are truly special and have captured the hearts of so many. The task I gave myself was to select only one particular location from each to focus on for a short set of sketches.
Brattleboro is a town in southern Vermont, right on the Connecticut River. The thriving arts community and nature that exists in the town makes it a special place to visit. I spent a weekend there with a best friend in my late twenties, and left feeling like it may be the most wonderful place in the world.
Boon Island, just off the coast of York, Maine, is a rocky island with a history marred by a strange abundance shipwrecks over the centuries, most notably, the Nottingham Galley in 1710. Despite its tiny footprint, the island carries a haunted reputation from the large number it seems to draw to itself. Today, Boon Island is uninhabited.
Salem, Massachusetts holds fame in the collective memory of Americans for the witch trials that happened in the late 1600’s, where over 200 people were accused of witchcraft. Outside of the bloody history, the town also holds great significance to the early United States, and was a strong contender with Boston for Massachusetts’ capital city. Today, the witch trials have been unequivocally condemned as a lesson in the terrible effects of unfortunate hysteria.
Franconia Notch is a breathtaking mountain pass in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, an incredible hike that I’ve done a few times over the years. Many outdoor enthusiasts enjoy this eight mile trail with some of the best views the state park holds. Like many New England locales, there are rich supernatural folklores associated with the trail—notably ghost apparitions and strange noises" - Alex Knutrud
