Michael Johnson: Equalize for Bass Trombone and Fixed Media

Equalize is a solo for bass trombone and fixed media and was written specifically for my dissertation project. The music for this piece is inspired by the final action scene from the movie Equalizer (Antoine Fuqua, 2014). The title also refers to the balance between the soloist and electronics during a performance as well as the EQ (equalization) of the electronics. The accompaniment (the media) purposefully utilizes several elements of modern pop music genres like trance and dubstep, specifically the use of “drops” that lead into the chorus sections of the piece. Performance time is just over 10 minutes.
